Sent from God in Heaven to Nazareth
Gabriel foretold the birth of Jesus,
To Virgin Mary brought the Lord’s greetings.
“Hail, thou favored one, the Lord is with thee.
Fear not for God favors thee and thou art blessed.
Behold thou shall conceive and bear a son
And thou shall call His very name Jesus.
He shall be called the Son of the Most High.
He shall rule the house of Jacob always
And His kingdom shall have no end, amen.”
Mary spoke unto Gabriel, saying,
“How can this be, as I am a virgin?”
Therefore Gabriel replied with these words:
“The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee
The power of the Lord shall shadow thee
And thus the child shall be called holy.
For nothing is impossible with God.”
She said, “My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in my God
For He hath seen His servant’s low estate.
Behold: generations shall call me blessed
For He That is Mighty has done great things,
Blessings for me and holy is His name.
And His mercy is on those that fear Him
From generation to generation.
Behold: He hath shown strength with His arm;
He has scattered the proud in their heart-thoughts
He hath put down the mighty from their thrones
Yet He hath exalted those humble ones.
He hath filled the hungry with all good things
Yet the rich He hath sent away empty.
Behold: he hath helped His servant Israel,
This done in remembrance of His mercy,
As He spoke to our fathers forever
Lo, and in those days a decree went forth.
Caesar proclaimed that all the world be taxed.
Each went to be taxed, to his own city.
And Joseph also went up, with Mary
Who was his betrothed, being great with child,
To Bethlehem, the city of David.
There the time came for Mary to give birth,
And she wrapped her firstborn in swaddling clothes
And then laid Him in a straw-lined manger
For inns had no room for a helpless babe.
Lo, shepherds were out in the fields nearby
And keeping watch over their flocks by night.
Behold: an angel of the Lord appeared.
The glory of the Lord shone around him
And the shepherds were filled with fear, sore ‘fraid.
But the angel said, “Do not be afraid.
For I bring to you tidings of great joy.
To you is born this day a Savior,
Which is Christ the Lord; this shall be a sign:
You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes
Lying in a manger in Bethlehem.
And suddenly a multitude appeared,
A host of angels praising God and saying,
“Glory, glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace and goodwill toward men.”
The shepherds spoke to each other, saying,
“Lo, let us go now unto Bethlehem
And see this thing of which the angel spoke.”
They hastened and found Mary and Joseph,
And the baby Jesus in the manger.
Having seen Him, they gave glory to God.
But Mary treasured these things in her heart.
